Vye Music History

Vye Music was founded in 2010 by 17-year-old Gold Coast teenager Charles Allatt. He envisioned a free streaming music service without limits, and by utilizing the massive music catalogue of music, and the comprehensive data of Last.fm, Vye Music was born. The site is the first step towards fulfilling Charlie's much larger vision of changing the way content is consumed and discovered online.

The original (and unreleased) version of Vye Music (see right) focussed more wholly on video, but this design was scrapped in favor of the current version, which is more conducive to a seamless music experience.

The new version of the site was built in less than 3 months with only parts of the code derived from the original version. A second, improved interface was designed in the following months following the success of the original. The new black style version had a more visual appeal and made the content significantly more accessible.

The future for Vye Music involves a much greater emphasis on mobile devices, including dedicated native applications for iPhones and Android phones. This will allows users to take their music with them anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question has not been answered below, then please don't hesitate to contact us at info(at)vyemusic.com.

1. How much does Vye Music cost?
$0.00. Zip. Nuthin'. Vye Music is a free service.

2. How many songs can I stream per month?
As many as you like. You can stream six, or sixty thousand, we don't mind. Seriously.

3. I clicked the 'PLAY' icon but it didn't start playing my song. What gives?
When you click the 'PLAY' icon   next to any track, it will QUEUE that song, which means it does not play immediately. Instead, it joins a list of music. This way you can select a bunch of tracks and queue them up, then leave Vye to play through your tunes without having to constantly change your selection. You can see how many tracks are currently queued by looking at the left-pane menu option 'Now Playing'. You can click this option to view the whole list, including previously listened-to tracks. When viewing the play queue clicking the 'PLAY' icon   next to any track will skip to that position in the queue, and begin the song immediately.

4. How do I create a Playlist?
If you are logged in, click the 'Create a Playlist' option in the left-pane menu. A new playlist should appear, with the words "Playlist Name?" in italics. Type a name for your new Playlist here, and then press ENTER to confirm. You can add tracks to your newly created list in the track-menu by clicking the 'Playlist' button, and then selecting your new list from the secondary menu. Remember to hit enter when you create your list.

5. In the track-menu clicking the Playlist button does nothing. How come?
This means you don't have any Playlists yet. You can click the 'Create a Playlist' option in the left-pane menu and create one. It should then appear in a secondary menu option when you click the Playlist option in the track-menu.

6. How do I select multiple track at a time?
When you select one track, hold SHIFT and click above or below to select all the tracks between your initial selection and your new one. You can also hold CTRL when clicking to toggle whether an individual track is selected. You cannot share more than one track at a time.

7. Why can't I see the 'My Music' / 'Playlist' track-menu option?
If either of these options is not visible then it is because you are not currently logged in. Click the login option at the top of the page.

8. Why can't I see the 'Share' track-menu option?
This option will disappear if you have more than one track selected, as you can only share a single track at a time. If you wish to share multiple tracks at a time, you should create a playlist, and share that instead.

9. Why does Vye sometimes play the wrong song?
Unfortunately sometimes people tag songs incorrectly on YouTube which means results are occasionally wrong on Vye Music as well. Sometimes things like interviews, instrumentals, and amateur covers can be displayed instead of the song you want. If this happens you can click the red "x" icon (video-top-right)  to request a more appropriate track. If you are logged in, Vye Music will remember this selection and never display the banned track again.

10. Can I get rid of the ads?
At the moment, the banner advertising we serve helps support the cost of development and hosting for Vye Music. Premium options may be available in the future, and those would include and ad-free interface.

11. Why do songs sometimes not play, and in the now playing queue it says "(FAILED)"?
If this is happening frequently then you may be experiencing a temporary problem. Clearing your browser cache may help. Otherwise, this problem generally only occurs when YouTube cannot find a suitable song for Vye Music to serve to you. This may change over time, as any errors in Last.fm's data (which occasionally cause this issue) are constantly being fixed, so if your music isn't avaialble today, it probably will be tomorrow. If you still have no success, try adding the song to your music library without extra words like "(Album Version)" or "(Remastered)" which usually don't affect the track, but can occasionally prevent YouTube from finding a match.

12. How do I tell you about my awesome idea for improving Vye Music?
Always open to suggestions, send us an email at info(at)vyemusic.com. Thanks for your support.
